Default The Windows Key

Not really a major problem, but I'm just wondering if you can toggle the Windows Key? It being so close to the Control button is extremely frustrating.

Thanks in advance.

Tyla, there is a way to reprogram or completely remove the (common) functionality of the windows key in XP, I'll see if I can dig up a link for you.

Under Vista I've no idea.

EDIT: Here's what I was looking for -

Very old program called KeyTweak. It is simply a remapper. You may be able to coax windows to be able to do it without the need for a 3rd party application, but I'm pretty sure that the windows key is offlimits in the remapper windows provides.

Please note that this program is for basic keyboards, so if you have anything like a G11/15/Cyborg you may experience problems.

My girlfriend was having the same problems. She kept on tabbing out of Windows accidentally, sometimes in mid-PvP.

I ended up physically removing the key from the keyboard. Try it, it works

If you have a G15 there is a switch just to the left of the LCD screen that disables the windows key. Not sure what to tell you about any other keyboard.

If you have a cheap keyboard just remove the key.

It's a laptop keyboard, and I really don't want to just remove it.

I'll try that link Lozza gave me, cheers.

Edit: It said:

Could not remove Scancode Map Value from registry.
The system returned the following message:

There are simple registry keys that will disable (and enable) the Windows logo key. It's just a simple notepad file (with a .reg extension) that is "merged" with the registry.
It only seems to work in XP though - I can't get it to work in Vista.

Or - open up Notepad and copy the following to it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,00,00 ,5b,e0,00,00,5c,e0,\ 00,00,00,00

Save the file as something like "disable_winlogo.reg". To use it, simply right click on the file and select "merge"

NOTE: it's good to backup the registry before trying this - just in case.

Also:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=-

And save it as "re-enable_winlogo.reg"

My apologies Tyla, they must have patched XP to disallow the change. I had it working fine on my PC a bit over 6 months ago but I never patched XP on that machine (yeah I know security holes).

regedit in XP is fairly powerful if you know what you are doing, thanks Quaker for listing the location, I've never been game to poke around too much except in the game files for tweking widescreen and graphics quality on older games.

In terms of Vista, they have shut off a lot of the regedit functions in an attempt to close security holes. Unfortunately this also means that some older games can't be tweaked for wide-screen either, much to my disappointment.
